Working Together for Jesus

Sunday School

Summer and early Fall are great times to begin training your new and continuing Sunday School Leaders. In this issue of Sunday School Builders you will find a variety of events and resources to prepare your leaders in launching a new year of excellent Sunday School Ministry. Each event and/or resource is specifically designed to assist your church in accomplishing its God-given mission of connecting with people for the purpose of making and growing disciples. This is the purpose of the Sunday School, but it takes leaders that are transformed by the power of God and equipped for making disciples. I trust that you will find exactly what you need to develop disciple-making leaders in your Sunday School.

Please connect with me if you have questions or if I can be of assistance to you.
Your brother,
Phil Stone
The trend today is for church leaders to prefer equipping experiences in their own church rather than traveling for training.  Leaderesource will make it easier for churches to equip their own Sunday School leaders.  Leaderesource is an online leadership development resource that features multiple conferences for general leaders and each age group: preschool, children, students, and adults. There are also conferences written in Spanish and for small groups.

Our association has what we call the "Sunday School Enrichment and Growth Process."  This is a process that teaches what the Sunday School is really meant to do, helps the church in enlisting and training workers and teachers of all ages, assists the church in putting together and training a Sunday School Planning Team, looks at ways to reach out to people and how to assimilate them into the church family, helps each worker in Sunday School to understand their job, and more.  The process will take 12 to 18 months. The Sunday School Director of one church that completed the process said, "Our church will never think about Sunday School the same way again."

The following is the definition of Sunday School that we are using for the process: “Sunday School is the foundational strategy in a local church for leading people to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and for building on-mission Christians through open Bible study groups that engage people in evangelism, discipleship, fellowship, ministry, worship and prayer.”

"Sunday School Is One Of Our Greatest Forces For Evangelism Today"

"I'm convinced that Sunday School is the greatest single agency for teaching God's Word, as well as a tremendous evangelistic force in its own right.
A lot of us have been taking Sunday School too much for granted.  We've been too complacent about it.  We've lost our visions.  We've been sitting with folded hands when we should be on the march for God.
I want to say to every Sunday School teacher that he/she is as much called of God as a missionary to the heart of Africa.  You need to prepare just as diligently - you need to labor just as earnestly - as if you were carrying the gospel to the most remote spot on the globe.
I believe that out of the tragedy of this hour, pastors and parents and Christian workers are once more beginning to be in earnest about Sunday School.  They are once more taking the offensive - going out to do visitation work; winning boys and girls to Christ.  They are seeing that Sunday School should be something more than just a place where church members send their children for an hour every Sunday morning.
God doesn't intend that revival should be limited to evangelistic campaigns.  He can send revival through the Sunday School.  He is waiting today for men and women who will work and pray and sacrifice.  Waiting for those who have a consuming desire to see others brought to Christ.  God is waiting for Christians who will yield to the cleansing, energizing fire of His Holy Spirit."

    A Missional Strategy
An important term being used today is "Missional".  What does it mean to be "missional" in ministry?  A simple understanding of the term is that we are living out a mission to which God has called us.  Jesus' ministry was missional.

    Regional Leadership Training Conferences
Building a R.E.A.L. Sunday School Ministry
Many Sunday School Leadership Training Conferences will be taking place across the state for both large and small churches.  These conferences are sponsored by the host association but are open to all churches in the region.  They are designed to assist the church in accomplishing its God-given mission of "Making Disciples".
For a listing of these conferences, click here.
    Sunday School Growth Plan Seminars

The seminar will cover basic principles and strategies through which the Sunday School might assist the church in creating a disciple-making culture.

Churches will provide Sunday School information to the specialist in advance and the specialist will bring a customized Sunday School Growth Plan to the seminar during which Sunday School growth principles will be taught and the customized plan will be explained.  Additional phone coaching by the specialist will be provided beyond the seminar.

    Sunday School Mentoring

A 12 month mentor-led process that provides principles, assignments, accountability, and continuous coaching in Sunday School Ministries.

    • Every facet of the Sunday School is evaluated in detail to create a disciple-making culture in the church.
    • The mentor will lead a cluster of up to 10 churches through 10 content driven sessions, each ending with specific assignments to complete and report on in the next meeting.  Each church receives an on-site, individual consultation by the mentor.  An age-group conference is added in Session 6 to improve class organization and Bible study teaching.  Topics include purpose, organization, enrollment, ministry, leader enlistment, evangelism, creating new units, and transformational teaching.
    • Cost is shared between the churches, association, and the NC Sunday School Ministries Partnership.
If interested, contact your Associational Missionary and request an Awareness Meeting in your association.

    PowerUP

Seven (7) Week Enrollment/High Attendance Strategy for All Leaders
Disciples are made one at a time by building relationships into friendships; connecting this new friend to the One you follow and then to a small group of fellow followers.  Class members are encouraged to connect with unchurched people/friends and then seek to enroll them in Sunday School. (Read more . . . )
